Dark Watchers
Fig 1. Dark Watchers
Silent, towering shadowy figures native to California's twilight skies whose harmless but unsettling observational behavior has been documented by the Chumash tribe for millennia.
Etymology

Historically termed 'Los Vigilantes Oscuros' by early Spanish settlers, and recognized by the Native Chumash tribe simply as 'The Old Ones'.

Anatomy

They physically manifest as giant-sized, featureless dark silhouettes. They are consistently observed wearing flowing cloaks, wide-brimmed hats, and carrying walking sticks.

Ecology

Restricted exclusively to the high elevations of the Santa Lucia Mountains, appearing strictly during the atmospheric conditions of twilight and dawn.

Behavior

They exhibit strict, silent observation, standing motionlessly on the horizon to watch passing travelers. If directly approached or acknowledged, they instantly vanish.

Mythology

Recorded for thousands of years in Chumash oral narratives, writer John Steinbeck popularized them in modern literature. Modern scientific analysts attribute the sightings to the 'Brocken spectre' effect, an optical illusion where an observer's shadow is magnified and cast onto a distant cloudbank by the sun.
